Concert report: Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin with Vilde Frang

An introduction to classical music!

Hi! My name is Lotte Strik, I’m 19 years old, and I am currently interning at the marketing department at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. The musical passion I inherited from my family led me to attend my first classical concert at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. Last Friday, October 18, 2024, I had the opportunity to experience live classical music from the international top!

The Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO Berlin), conducted by Robin Ticciati, shone on stage alongside soloist Vilde Frang in the Hertog Jan Zaal. It was wonderful to be at this concert. In the first part of the performance, Vilde Frang performed Elgar’s Violin Concerto. This work consists of three movements, each with its own charm, which stands out individually and together forms a beautiful whole. The first movement, Allegro, was initiated by the orchestra and then taken over by the soloist. The recognizable melodies from the violin solo returned in the orchestra’s accompaniment. Dynamic contrasts alternated with short, technical musical phrases, with the atmosphere being excellently conveyed by the orchestra.

The second movement, Andante, showcased its cantabile beauty, often described as song-like. The powerful collaboration between the orchestra and the violinist created a warm feeling and emotional depth. The technical opening of the violin solo in the third movement, Allegro molto, created a lively atmosphere. Melodies from the first two movements returned, enhanced by the pizzicato technique in the accompaniment. The piece concluded with a powerful ending by violinist Vilde Frang and DSO Berlin.

The audience deeply appreciated this piece with a thunderous round of applause, which was more than deserved! It was truly beautiful!

In the second half of the concert, DSO Berlin performed Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 in D major. In this piece, all the instruments had their moment to shine. The dynamic and technical nuances kept me captivated throughout. As with the previous work, the four distinct movements stood out clearly and formed a harmonious whole. The building finale created an incredible acoustical experience and served as a perfect conclusion to the evening.

Once again, the orchestra received a fantastic applause from the audience. The musicians had put on a musical spectacle that left me with the perfect word to describe the evening: enjoyment.

In short, a night to remember!
