‘Four top performers with a vibrant energy; they grab you from the first note! […] The great promise of Dutch string quartets.’ What is this about? It’s about the Animato Quartet, which won the Dutch Classical Talent Audience Award in 2022 and the Kammermusikpreis Kultur Gut Hasselburg in 2023. Just recently, they also took home the most prestigious Dutch award for classical chamber music talent: the Anton Kersjes Prize. The jury commented: ‘Layered, intense playing with a wide range of colors.’
Is it a coincidence? Benjamin Britten was 28 when he wrote his First Quartet, and Maurice Ravel was also that age when he completed his only quartet. It was Britten’s first significant chamber music work and the last piece he wrote during his American period; the premiere took place in Los Angeles. Controversies surrounded Ravel’s quartet. He sent the first movement to the composition competition at the Paris Conservatory but failed to win for the third time in a row, leading to his expulsion from the school. Fortunately, his colleague Debussy, whose quartet Ravel had kept in mind while composing, had a different view: ‘In the name of the Music Gods and in my interest, do not change a single note of what you have written.’ Wise advice. Ravel’s sole quartet probably became the most performed string quartet of the 20th century.
After the concert, enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with a treat. This is included with your ticket.
