‘Making music together is incredibly powerful. It creates a sense of unity: being one together!’ said Jaap van Zweden in an interview with NRC. This feeling has been the driving force behind his relentless passion for music since a young age. A true rocket engine that propelled his career to great heights. From Amsterdam to New York, he has waved the baton over some of the world’s most famous orchestras. Now, Van Zweden is returning for a while to ‘his’ Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. “They play their socks off for me,” said the top maestro. And the renowned Flemish orchestra will have every opportunity to shine in Beethoven’s magnificent Ninth Symphony.
There will be a free introduction at 1:30 PM, made possible by the Friends of Muziekgebouw Eindhoven.
Two hundred years ago, Beethoven put the final notes of this masterpiece on paper. The message seems more relevant than ever. ‘Alle Menschen werden Brüder’ (All men shall be brothers) sings the choir in the exuberant Finale of this symphony of symphonies. Speaking of unity and being one! Jaap’s chemistry with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra was palpable during their performance of Mahler’s Sixth Symphony in 2023. The roof came off. The ideal combination for Beethoven’s masterpiece, with a symphony orchestra, a large choir, and no fewer than four vocal soloists.
