‘Mind-blowingly good.’ NRC Handelsblad couldn’t express its immense enthusiasm any other way. And Trouw wrote: ‘[His] playing is superior in every aspect.’ Both are talking about Arcadi Volodos. A phenomenon. Since his debut in New York in 1996, he has performed with the world’s leading orchestras and conductors. But Volodos is also a master of the solo recital. All alone on the big stage, with the jet-black grand piano and dramatically lit. Now, he surprises with something new: the master of refinement plays Frédéric Chopin.

This is, of course, remarkable: having had a fantastic career for three decades, and now, finally, playing Chopin! Chopin is, after all, the quintessential piano composer, isn’t he? Chopin is the piano. But only after a series of albums that started with Volodos plays Liszt and was, for now, capped off in 2019 with Volodos plays Schubert (Edison Classical Award, Solo Instrumental category), we now have Chopin. His shorter pieces. The dreamy, twilight-filled nocturnes, which are perhaps how we most often associate Chopin. The slightly more angular, wittier, and dance-like mazurkas, directly inspired by his homeland, Poland. And more. This will be something. Is he playing ‘like a new Horowitz’ again? (Ruhr Nachrichten).

Program

Chopin, including a selection of Nocturnes, Mazurkas.
