A new Dutch string quartet! In 2023, four internationally renowned musicians—each with a background as a soloist and in world-famous chamber orchestras—came together to form the Arethusa Quartet. Having performed together at numerous festivals, they shared the same passions, ideals, and love for the string quartet. When deep friendship was added to the mix, Arethusa was born. Their performances combine imagination, creativity, and a spirit of adventure. Their program features two works that, though separated by two centuries, both embody the beauty and expressive power of the string quartet in their own way: Pēteris Vasks’ resonant and moving Sixth String Quartet and Mendelssohn’s lyrical and spirited early work, Opus 13.

The Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks is one of the most frequently performed contemporary composers, often incorporating elements of traditional Latvian music into his works. His compositions frequently explore the tension between humanity and nature—its beauty but also its looming power. His Sixth String Quartet has a surprisingly classical, even romantic character—perhaps a nostalgic reflection on times past? The titles of its four movements speak for themselves: Lebewohl, Blick zurück, Verloren, Begegnen (Farewell, Looking Back, Lost, Encounter). At just 18 years old, Mendelssohn responded to Beethoven’s legacy with his Second String Quartet, written shortly after the composer’s death. While Beethoven’s late quartets were not universally appreciated at the time, Mendelssohn admired them deeply—a sentiment clearly reflected in this passionate and expressive work, one of his most heartfelt compositions.
