The Matthäus-Passion is one of the most famous and impressive compositions by Bach. His interpretation of the Passion story of Jesus is captivating and moving, and it remains incredibly popular. The traditional performances by the Bachvereniging are internationally renowned and this year are conducted by one of the best baroque conductors of our time: Masaaki Suzuki. With his acclaimed Bach Collegium Japan, he has recorded nearly all of Bach’s choral works. Suzuki was already a guest conductor of the Matthäus-Passion for the Bachvereniging in 2005. Twenty years later, he returns with even more experience and a deeper vision of Bach’s masterpiece. He has performed it over a hundred times around the world.

‘Kommt ihr Töchter, helft mir Klagen’… This is the poignant beginning of the work that brings to life the events surrounding Easter according to the Gospel of Matthew. Bach may have delivered here the most beautiful thing he could offer. Or is it perhaps the closing chorale of the first part, ‘O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde gross’? Or – as many will feel – the aria ‘Erbarme dich’ for alto with the ‘sighing’ solo violin? And no one will remain dry-eyed when hearing what Bach has in store for the final chorus, ‘Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder’. The story goes that even Bach shed tears as he wrote down these notes. The Matthäus-Passion: a work to experience anew every year.
