“The young Busch Trio is timeless and extraordinary in their dedication”, NRC wrote about this trio years ago. De Volkskrant simply called them “incredibly good.” Brothers Ori and Omri Epstein and violinist Mathieu van Bellen first met in the cafeteria of the Royal Academy of Music in London. “Let’s play something,” the young music students said to each other. Today, they travel the world and have released a series of critically acclaimed albums. The piano trios by Beethoven and Mendelssohn featured in this afternoon’s program are at the very heart of their repertoire.
“Why are we called the Busch Trio? Well, my violin once belonged to the legendary violinist Adolf Busch,” Van Bellen explained in an interview. “That’s why. But people don’t always get the name. Adolf and Busch—(laughing) not exactly the most fortunate names in history…” That violin is a stunning 1783 Guadagnini. The Busch Trio has a deep passion for the great musicians of the early 20th century—old recordings of Heifetz, Cortot, Casals, Feuermann, and of course, Adolf Busch. Inspired by them, they play on gut strings, which give a deep, warm sound. Mathieu van Bellen: “The violin feels happier that way.”
