Cappella Amsterdam, in collaboration with the Berlage Saxophone Quartet and author Jan Brokken, presents The Righteous. Brokken’s novel The Righteous tells the story of the Dutch consul Jan Zwartendijk, who risked his life for the freedom of others. Zwartendijk saved thousands of lives, including Polish Jewish men, women, and children who fled to Lithuania and desperately sought a way to leave Europe. He issued visas that allowed Jews to travel from Lithuania, through the Soviet Union on the Trans-Siberian Express, to Vladivostok, then to Japan, and onward to America, Shanghai, and other countries, thus rescuing them from the Holocaust. The story also highlights Leo Adler and his Bella Hamburg, who, after six years of fleeing, reached New York but longed for their original continent and language.
