Together with Cappella Amsterdam, led by Daniel Reuss, we celebrate 80 years of freedom alongside the Berlage Saxophone Quartet and storyteller Jan Brokken.

With The Righteous, based on Jan Brokken’s book of the same name, they tell the story of Dutch consul and Philips executive Jan Zwartendijk, who risked his life for the freedom of others. At the start of World War II, Zwartendijk issued visas in Kaunas, Lithuania, for thousands of Jewish refugees. These visas for Curaçao allowed them to travel via the Trans-Siberian Express to Japan, escaping the horrors of the Holocaust. His brave actions saved countless lives.

The story also follows Leo Adler and his wife, Bella Hamburg, who, after a six-year journey, reached New York but continued to long for their homeland and native language.

Through Jan Brokken’s narration, interwoven with music for choir and saxophone quartet, this seamlessly composed concert shows how the courageous acts of one person can save thousands of lives.
