As a venue, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven follows the guidelines of our trade association VSCD (Association of Theatre and Concert Hall Directors). These guidelines state, among other things, that Russian and Belarusian artists are welcome as long as they have not actively expressed support for the invasion of Ukraine. The guidelines also state that publicly distancing oneself from the regime should not be required as a condition for cooperation due to the personal danger that this entails. We take this framework seriously because we believe it is important to act with integrity when it comes to the interests of musicians.
We understand that cancelling a concert can cause disappointment, for the audience as well as for the artist. Music connects people, and we therefore value the opportunity for as many people as possible to share that experience, especially in turbulent times. That is why we find it difficult to make a decision disrupting that connection.
In the case of Elisabeth Leonskaja, we have carefully considered all circumstances. She has been committed to young musicians for many years and has contributed greatly to making classical music widely accessible. She also states that she sees it as her duty to perform and mentor young talent and not to get involved in politics.
The extent to which the directive applies to Leonskaja is complex: despite her Russian background, she was not born in Russia and also has Austrian citizenship. Although she does not live in Russia, she has nevertheless chosen to perform in Moscow, where the theatre where she is performing has now decided to make tickets available free of charge to members of the army and their families.
Ultimately, we have to conclude that the circumstances leave us no choice but to cancel the concert planned for December 4th. We realise that this will disappoint music lovers, but we would like to emphasise that the sadness caused by the military conflict in Ukraine is our primary concern at this time. We have already informed her management.

The Georgian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja is one of those rare artists who has already been awarded a lifetime achievement prize: for her long-standing contributions to piano music, she received the International Classical Music Award in 2020. After Georgia had already granted her the highest honor, the Priestess of Art, she was also awarded the Österreichische Ehrenzeichen für Wissenschaft und Kunst (Austrian Honorary Award for Science and Art) in Austria, first class. Now, it is all about Schubert, Schubert, and Schubert. His three final piano sonatas – a truly powerful trio, often performed together and proven to be highly successful. They will surely resonate with “passion, power, and purpose” (The Guardian).
Franz Schubert had one great wish: he didn’t want to be merely Schubert, but also to compose in the same way as Beethoven. His musical idol, this man who walked the same streets in the same city, Vienna, as he did. Beethoven, for him, was the standard. The magnificent impromptus and moments musicales were not enough; it had to be Beethoven-like sonatas. In the final months of his short life, Schubert succeeded in doing just that. Three grand piano sonatas. One dramatic, one lyrical, and one… well, the last one defies any description. So much is expressed here. This sonata in B-flat, the most performed, is the pinnacle of Schubert’s piano oeuvre.
