American pianist Eric Lu plays a romantic program that will make your mouth water. Lu is no ordinary pianist: in 2025, he won the prestigious Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Born in 1997, he has already performed on major concert stages around the world, both inside and out. Lu’s playing is described as ‘thoughtful, poetic and powerful’, qualities that he can showcase in this romantic program with music by Brahms, Rachmaninov and Chopin, plus a preview of Schumann. In music magazine Luister, his debut CD with music by Schubert was described as ‘subtle and modest, melodious and also exuberant’.
The piano music in this Sunday afternoon concert represents an era of Romantics who lost their hearts to the piano’s big brother. For all four, the grand piano was the instrument on which they composed; for Chopin and Rachmaninov, it was the medium with which they made their names. Although there is a hundred-year difference between these two composers, their music shares the same intensity and romantic atmosphere. It is characterized by both melancholy and tranquility as well as exuberance and virtuosity. Pianists embrace them because they offer the opportunity to showcase the entire range of pianistic skills.
