The Estonian Arvo Pärt proves that serious ‘modern music’ can become incredibly popular. While contemporary music might sometimes seem inaccessible, the opposite is true as well. Almost every choir has the now 90-year-old Pärt in its repertoire. Tonight, the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir presents a program entirely dedicated to him. Pärt composed Kanon pokajanen especially for them and dedicated it to the choir. It is one of his finest works, promising a unique evening.

The choir has won two Grammy Awards and been nominated for an impressive fifteen. The Guardian wrote of their performance of Kanon pokajanen: “Pärt wrote this piece for this choir, and it’s hard to imagine it being sung by anyone else. Their sound is warmer and more haunting than that of a British church choir.” Kanon pokajanen was written in 1998 for the 750th anniversary of the Cologne Cathedral. The title means ‘penitence’ and the piece is based on the Russian Orthodox liturgy of penitence. In monasteries, this prayer is sung at dawn, giving the transition from darkness to light a symbolic meaning.
