‘Composed music should emerge as if it were an improvisation, and composing is already a form of improvisation,’ said Fazıl Say in an interview. The Turkish master pianist feels at home with any approach to music. The former child prodigy and son of a novelist describes himself as a storyteller in music. Whether interpreting Beethoven’s stormy ‘Tempest’, bringing Scarlatti’s ancient purity to life, or playing his own compositions inspired by jazz, Stravinsky, or Turkish folk music, ‘there is always a story I have imagined that resonates in the background.’
Fazıl Say (born in Ankara in 1970) has been touching the hearts of audiences and critics for over 25 years. His concerts are said to be ‘different.’ Open, direct, and exhilarating; he speaks straight to the heart. In his distinctive, accessible, and engaging style, Say has composed over 100 successful works. Alongside Busoni’s monumental version of Bach’s famous Chaconne for violin, and favorite repertoire from Beethoven and Scarlatti, he will present a selection of these works tonight à la carte. ‘Say was all exuberance, using his hands, arms, and head to indicate entries and his whole body to stimulate eruptions,’ wrote an enthusiastic New York Times reviewer.
