Johannes Schenck did what every genius does: ignore boundaries and do what no one ever thought possible. And so, our 17th-century compatriot fused Italian bravado, German depth, and French finesse into a musical language that belongs to him, and him alone. Gambist François Joubert-Caillet and harpsichordist Philippe Grisvard tap into Schenck’s richest vein: sonatas from Tyd en Konst-Oeffeninger, Scherzi Musicali, and L’Écho du Danube—titles that reveal that the musical horizons of this superman on strings extended far beyond Amsterdam.
