This doesn’t happen often. A unique opportunity to hear all the Rosenkranz Sonatas by Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber in one evening. A monument in chamber music. The Chaconne for solo violin, which concludes the cycle, is sometimes heard on concert programs, but all the sonatas, all fifteen… that is a rarity. Austrian violinist Gunar Letzbor is the leading specialist in this repertoire and has recorded the cycle twice. He impresses with both his fabulous violin playing and his musicological knowledge, ensuring an optimal performance. Not to be missed!

The Bohemian-Austrian composer and adventurous violinist Biber wrote his Mystery Sonatas, also known as the Rosenkranz Sonatas, in 1676. He dedicated them to Prince-Bishop Maximilian Gandolf Graf von Khuenburg. But what was Biber’s intention? Did he want to collaborate with the devil in these sonatas, or did he aim to drive him away? After all, Biber also composed religious music such as masses, vespers, and a requiem. Whatever the case, these sonatas represent a tremendous challenge for the violin. In each sonata, the four strings of the violin are tuned differently, requiring not only musicality but also a great deal of mental strength to bring them to life.

On Thursday, February 19, 2026, violinist Gunar Letzbor will give a Masterclass.
