‘Brutally harsh and vulnerable: Ivo Pogorelich is back, and how,’ stated De Volkskrant when the pianist returned to the stage after a period of absence. He immediately received five stars. Now, you could also call Beethoven’s Pathétique Sonata ‘knetterhard and vulnerable,’ because what a drama unfolds in the first few minutes. Chopin’s Second Sonata is a rather eccentric work. Truly something for Pogorelich. At the heart of the sonata is the famous, sorrowful funeral march. And the finale? It’s a kind of sigh, a whim, almost to the point of madness. ‘Chopin never refused to play this sonata, but after the finale, he immediately took his hat and left,’ so the story goes.

Croatian pianist Ivo Pogorelich caused a stir when he participated in the 10th Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1980. For completely obscure reasons, he did not make it to the finals. Some jury members left the competition, including the legendary pianist Martha Argerich, who declared Pogorelich to be a genius without question. His astonishing technique and unorthodox interpretations have remained, earning him international fame. And so, NRC wrote, ‘The eccentric master pianist enters a sound world where different laws of nature apply.’ He now plays, among other works, two intensely beloved sonatas by Beethoven and Chopin.
