César Franck’s Sonata in A major is the sonata of all sonatas for violin and piano. This concert offers the opportunity to hear this work at its finest. Violinist Janine Jansen and pianist Alexandre Kantorow represent an exceptional group of musicians, who, in addition to their talent, also bring their spirited musical stage presence to the table. Janine Jansen, a regular at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven, needs little introduction; Alexandre Kantorow has been described as a “fire-breathing virtuoso with poetic charm.” Charm and temperament will prevail during this concert, alongside knowledge, skill, experience, and the joy of playing.

Frank’s romantic sonata expresses the lyricism of the violin, the sparkle of the grand piano, and the gentle romanticism of the Belgian composer. Nature and poetry blend blissfully in Debussy’s sonata, albeit in three movements but only thirteen minutes long, which also constitutes his last major composition. Beethoven’s Sonata in E-flat is a grand and virtuosic work from his middle period, dedicated to his teacher Antonio Salieri. The intensity of the opening movement reflects the transition from the Classical to the early Romantic period.
