If you win the Second Prize and the Audience Prize at the renowned and formidable Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, the world lies at your feet. Violinist Joshua Brown (1999) made a lasting impression on listeners in 2024 with Johannes Brahms’s Violin Concerto. Brahms will also feature in this Sunday afternoon concert, this time with the Violin Sonata No. 3, accompanied by the Dutch pianist Paolo Giacometti. Schumann’s Violin Sonata No. 1 is also on the programme. Despite the age difference — Giacometti was born in 1970 — these musicians meet each other in this Romantic repertoire, which ranks among the finest works of these composers.

Schumann himself was not very fond of his first violin sonata (“that is why I wrote a second one”), but today the work is known as lively and even passionate. The first performance in 1851 was played with his wife and muse Clara at the piano. Brahms himself performed the premiere of his Third Violin Sonata. This work from 1887 is serious in character and contains many lyrical passages. The piano takes the lead in the fast third movement, Poco presto con sentimento. The work has something of a concerto about it, including a cadenza and a thunderous finale in the fourth movement, Presto con agitato.
