In the Netherlands, when you think of harp, you think of Lavinia Meijer. She quickly conquered the concert stage about twenty years ago; initially primarily with classical music, but later also with works by minimalist Philips Glass and other contemporary composers. Glass himself credited her with adapting his music for solo harp, an initiative that brought her great success. Lavinia Meijer, along with Reyer Zwart, performs music by Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Wim Mertens, Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, and, yes, Lavinia Meijer! “A harp can create effects that are impossible on any other instrument,” she explains her love for her instrument.
Meijer has won almost every award possible in her field, culminating in the Dutch Music Prize in 2009. In 2022, she was appointed a Member of the Academy of Arts, a branch of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her albums have received two Edison Awards, two of which have achieved platinum status. Her solo CDs have been streamed over 100 million times on Spotify. This places Lavinia Meijer among the top international artists with the most classical music streams. What makes her happy: “Musicians who dare to think outside the box!”
