The Latvian Radio Choir is one of the most prestigious choirs in the world. The choir’s sound is known for being flawless, crystal clear and perfectly pure. The chamber choir was founded in 1940 and sings the entire choral repertoire, but in recent decades it has distinguished itself through its preference for Baltic contemporary music, which is often tranquil in character. In other words, the contemplative music of Arvo Pärt is perfectly suited to the choir. Pärt wrote his deeply religious monumental Kanon pokajanen, or Penitential Psalms, in 1997, on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of Cologne Cathedral.
Kanon pokajanen is inspired by the “Canon of Repentance” from the Russian Orthodox church tradition. The Kanon means a great deal to the composer, who worked on it for two years. In his own words: “From the very first moment, the text captivated me. The time we spent together was extremely enriching”. The texts from the Old and New Testaments deal with death and immortality, weakness and strength, day and night, the human and the divine. For Pärt, writing this work was a meditative process. “I wanted to let the words find their own sound, their own melodic line”.
