Mikhail Pletnev: the Russian pianist, conductor and composer is known as one of the greatest all-round performers of our time. He is blessed with the ability to enchant his audience and produces exceptionally profound, expressive interpretations. Wherever and whatever he plays, the music comes to life under his hands as if it were being written on the spot. Pletnev is never predictable and remains faithful to the composer’s intentions. At the age of 21, the young Pletnev won the Gold Medal and first prize at the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition. He has more than fulfilled his great promise.
‘I am now overflowing with music and beautiful melodies,“ wrote Robert Schumann, young, to his beloved Clara Wieck in 1839. He was working on his Kreisleriana at the time. You can hear this abundance. Schumann himself called it ‘my favourite work”. The title refers to the fantasy character Kreisler from a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, “an eccentric, wild and witty conductor”. Rarely did Schumann express himself more romantically, passionately and compellingly than here. Pletnev also comes across well with Bach this evening. His music is characterised by an almost stoic balance and “Abgeklärtheit”. And then there is Grieg, the composer who was able to compose such lively, vital music about his country: vast fjords, grey-green mountains, perhaps a troll here and there… Grieg is Norway!
