Hertog Jan Zaal
-Alpesh Chauhan was somewhat anxious the evening his parents came to listen when he conducted Bruckner. They had only just discovered classical music. Would they appreciate the majestic structures of his favorite composer? But afterward, his father enthusiastically entered his dressing room and compared the symphony to a ride on the Orient Express.
An impressive train that never stops. And this is how maestro Chauhan recommends you listen: sit back, let yourself be carried away, and enjoy the beautiful vistas of Bruckner’s First Symphony, which he affectionately called “’s kecke Beserl,” or “the cheeky girl.” Before the intermission, top violinist Simone Lamsma shines in the fire and ice of Sibelius’ famous Violin Concerto. The orchestra opens with one of Bruckner’s greatest idols, Richard Wagner. His overture *Der fliegende Holländer* is a symphonic celebration.
