Masato Suzuki was steeped in Bach’s music from a young age. The Japanese conductor and harpsichordist was born in The Hague, where his father Masaaki studied with Bach expert Ton Koopman. “At home, around the dining table, it was always about Bach,” he remarked. His father Masaaki became well-known with his Bach Collegium Japan.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Masato conducts Bach worldwide and led the renowned performance of the St. Matthew Passion in Naarden last year. In this dynamic concert, he begins as a harpsichordist within the orchestra, then performs Bach’s beautiful First Harpsichord Concerto as a soloist, and finally takes the podium as conductor. The Philzuid string section will be in the spotlight with a dazzling Stravinsky and, as the grand finale, Haydn’s beloved Symphony No. 103, known as the “Drum Roll.”
