Too Western, too juicy, too sentimental’ were the judgments of Tchaikovsky’s nationalist colleagues in 1866 about his First Symphony. Today, Tchaikovsky, perhaps precisely because of this, is the most beloved Russian composer. His First Symphony ‘Winter Dreams’ is quintessentially Tchaikovsky: wistful, passionate, and full of captivating melodies. In turn, Tchaikovsky spoke highly of his older colleague Borodin. ‘I particularly want to recommend In the Steppes of Central Asia, it is very beautiful,’ he wrote in 1886.
Let yourself be enchanted by symphonic winter dreams and panoramic musical views from old Russia. Piano soloist Ralph van Raat (‘sensational clarity’ de Volkskrant) performs a brand-new Piano Concerto by Karen Tanaka, who once won the Gaudeamus Award with her piano concerto Anamorphose. A heartwarming concert under the direction of the young Belgian maestro Martijn Dendievel.
