They play two completely different instruments, but when minds are aligned, the notes move in the same direction. Cellist Quirine Viersen and accordionist Vincent van Amsterdam are among the best in their field internationally. Both won the Dutch Music Prize, the highest distinction awarded in the Netherlands, and both have built careers that have taken them around the world as soloists and chamber musicians. Music from all directions appears on the music stand, from the baroque Bach and the romantic Mendelssohn to the impressionistic Boulanger, the contemporary Auerbach, and the tango-loving Piazzolla.

Bach on the accordion? Why not. “Whether it’s a harpsichord, a string quartet, an accordion or even a set of kettles, Bach’s music remains just as beautiful,” says Vincent van Amsterdam. The first classical composition for accordion dates from 1927, and contemporary composers have since embraced the instrument. Thanks to its many registers (tone colors), the accordion adapts easily, in this case to the sonorous sound of the cello. “Did you know that the accordion is the only acoustic instrument that can start a chord softly and gradually make it louder?”
