It is August 8, 1941: Germany breaks the non-aggression pact with Russia, and the first air raids commence. Sergei Prokofiev and other ‘artistic workers’ are evacuated south in four buses. Prokofiev ends up in Nalchik, the capital of the Soviet autonomous republic of Kabardino-Balkaria at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains. The war is no joke, but it brings him an unexpected opportunity. He encounters an impassioned individual who enthusiastically presents a collection of Kabardian songs and says, “Make a string quartet out of this!” Prokofiev did just that, and the result is his Second String Quartet, filled with exotic sounds. The Ragazze Quartet will handle it with care; they are one of the freshest and most influential ensembles in classical music. After the intermission, Thomas Beijer will join them. “Thomas Beijer is a dreamer with poetry and passion” (De Nieuwe Muze).
