Clarinetist Sabine Meyer had a remarkable solo career and was the first woman to join the Berlin Philharmonic. She performed worldwide with many renowned orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vienna Philharmonic. It is also thanks to her that the clarinet, once underestimated as a solo instrument, regained its place on the concert stage. After a beautiful musical career, she is now bidding farewell, so let’s enjoy her one last time. Violist Nils Mönkemeyer and pianist William Youn join her for this special concert. But there is no heaviness in this farewell: the music is light in tone.

Robert Schumann’s Märchenbilder is fairy-tale-like, dreamy, and romantic. Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances are rhythmic and marked, full of the Hungarian spirit. Milhaud’s Scaramouche brings a different kind of rhythm, undoubtedly inspired by his trip to Brazil in the 1920s. Dmitri Shostakovich is known for his somber, dramatic symphonies reflecting the difficult times of communism, but he could also be light, even airy, and charming. Max Bruch’s Acht Stücke reveals a full-blooded romantic and flirts with Brahms. They show that Bruch had more to offer than just his famous First Violin Concerto.
