An evening about the astonishing ease with which people almost a hundred years ago succumbed to the totalitarian temptation. About a grandfather who colluded with the Germans for the entire war and never showed any remorse for the horrific consequences. About small choices with large consequences, about how one could happen because the other existed. About the refutation of excuses in hindsight, because everyone always has the choice to do what is right. The Berlage Saxophone Quartet performs music by composers who also faced that choice: to collaborate or to resist.

Sheila Sitalsing is a journalist, writer, and economist. She writes essays and columns about politics and society. For eleven years, she wrote a widely read column in de Volkskrant every other day; for this, she was awarded the Heldring Prize for the best columnist in the Netherlands. In 2024, she received an honorary doctorate from the University for Humanism. She wrote the political biography Mark and compiled her columns about the corona year 2020 into Dagboek van een krankzinnig jaar.
