The international jazz festival So What’s Next is named after the legendary jazz track ‘So What’ and the relentless innovative drive of creator Miles Davis. The festival offers an inspiring selection of contemporary jazz with an adventurous mix of established names and promising rising stars in funk, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and rock. Each act has a unique sound but shares one common feature: they all push the boundaries of jazz.

Guitar legend Al Di Meola is coming to So What’s Next for an exclusive concert with the show ‘The Electric Years’! Together with his band, he will perform classics from albums like ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’ and ‘Elegant Gypsy’. Di Meola made his name in the ’70s with the supergroup Return to Forever and became famous for his lightning-fast playing and melodic style. During this concert, he will showcase a mix of new tracks from his upcoming album ‘Twentyfour’ and iconic songs from his ‘electric years’.

His career began as a sideman with greats like Clark Terry and Art Blakey and grew through collaborations with Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. The latest album from his quartet, ‘The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul,’ showcases his refined and adventurous vision. The best way to experience this legend and his fantastic band is on the stage at So What’s Next!

Jazz talent
Rising star Lakecia Benjamin is making a global impression with her jazz talent, energetic performances, and craftsmanship. Her alto saxophone playing is infused with funk and soul, aligned with the rhythms of the younger generation. Following her debut album ‘Retox,’ she released ‘Pursuance: The Coltranes’ in 2020, an acclaimed album with radical reinterpretations of Alice and John Coltrane. In 2023, she released ‘Phoenix,’ an album that blends jazz, funky soul, R&B, and hip-hop, earning her three GRAMMY nominations. At So What’s Next, she will undoubtedly perform new tracks from this impressive album, promising an overwhelming set.
Michelle David & The True-tones

New Yorker Michelle David began singing in church at the age of four and joined The Mission of Love at five. She toured with the Broadway musical ‘Mama,’ collaborated on shows like ‘The Sound of Motown’ and ‘Glory of Gospel,’ and recorded with artists such as Diana Ross and Michael Bolton. With The True-tones, she released six gospel albums, received an Edison nomination, and earned acclaim for ‘Truth & Soul,’ which was named Album of the Year by BBC Radio 6 Music. Their new album ‘Brothers & Sisters’ serves as the foundation for their soulful live performances.
Dulfer! Total Response
Tenor saxophonist Hans Dulfer is still going strong despite recent health issues. Last autumn, he performed with his daughter Candy at the Blue Note Club in Tokyo and plays with his new band, Total Response, at Dutch festivals. This all-star lineup has proven to be an energetic unit. With his saxophone sound, Dulfer has been a prominent figure in the Dutch jazz scene for 65 years and has gained international acclaim. In 2024, he will celebrate his 84th birthday with a new band performing Dulfer classics and new tracks. Expect a spectacular performance at So What’s Next!
