In this concert, finalists of the Elisabeth Competition, the Oskar Back Competition, and the Cello Biënnale take the stage. Expect an afternoon full of chamber music with young talent and remarkable ensemble playing. This program brings together four composers who each gave chamber music around 1900 a distinctive voice in their own way. Composers from the former regions of Bohemia and Moravia, such as Antonín Dvořák and Leoš Janáček, drew strong inspiration from the folk music, rhythms, and stories of their regions. Their music reflects a world that is both intimate and vibrant: dance-like, lyrical, and often imbued with a fairy-tale atmosphere.

In contrast stands the early piano quartet fragment by Gustav Mahler, written in his youth, in which the romantic expression of the late nineteenth century is already clearly present. In this performance, the fragment is framed by a later musical reflection by Alfred Schnittke, creating a remarkable encounter between a young Romantic voice and a modern perspective on the past.

The program culminates in the first Piano Quartet by Johannes Brahms, a monumental work in which lyricism, dramatic power, and virtuosity come together.
