As long as the Storioni Festival has existed, now 20 years, Storioni on Sunday has been one of its highlights. Of course the Storioni Trio, consisting of violinist Wouter Vossen, cellist Marc Vossen and pianist Bart van de Roer, will be there, alongside a host of guest performers who belong to the very top of chamber music, as well as young talent that always gets plenty of opportunities during this multi-day festival. The full programme has not yet been announced. What we can already promise: a substantial part of the concert will feature an arrangement for sextet of Mozart’s beloved Sinfonia Concertante K364, with solo parts for violin and viola.

A sinfonia concertante is a hybrid of symphony and concerto. Mozart (1756–1791) wrote his K364 in 1780, when he was in his early twenties. At the time he was touring across Europe and also visited Paris. By then he had already written his five violin concertos, nine piano concertos, thirty symphonies and a large number of chamber music works. Three years earlier he had composed his first concertante symphony, for solo wind instruments and small orchestra; K364 features the violin and viola as solo instruments. The popular piece has three movements and has been arranged for various instrumentations. The melancholic slow movement, the Andante, plays a reconciling role in the novel Sophie’s Choice by William Styron.
