Pianist, composer, illustrator, animator… Thomas Beijer is all of these. This afternoon, he invites you into the fascinating universe of Eric Satie, combining piano music with film projections. “Eric Satie was an absurdist Dadaist,” Beijer said in an interview. “Play it like a nightingale with a toothache,” reads the instruction above one of Satie’s pieces. With his unconventional melodies and peculiar titles like Dried Embryos, The Dreaming Fish, and War Song of the Bean King, one might almost believe that the word satire derives from Satie’s name. Thomas Beijer presents it all—his own animations, excerpts from Satie’s diaries, and outstanding piano performances—offering a sensory, immersive experience.

In 2022, Thomas Beijer received the Dutch Music Prize, the highest distinction for a classical musician in the Netherlands. He graduated cum laude from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and collaborates in chamber music with partners such as cellist Quirine Viersen, violinist Simone Lamsma, and singers Judith van Wanroij, Barbara Kozelj, and Laetitia Gerards. And as if that weren’t enough, Beijer has emerged as a true creative polymath. He illustrates, composes, animates, aspires to sculpt, and writes. In 2017, he made his literary debut with the novella Geen Jalapeños, published by Prometheus, and he also writes essays on classical music.
