To Marrakech is a musical journey through Turkey, Greece, Egypt, and Morocco. This evening presents the fourth installment of the Istanbul Midnight project, featuring the Mediterraneo Band and guest vocalist Salah Eddine Mesbah. The music connects Andalusian elegance, Ottoman grandeur, the folk soul of Rebetiko, and poetic Arabic traditions within a rich makam language. Traditional styles are interwoven with Western instruments to create a fresh, authentic sound. The band, made up of musicians from the Netherlands, Syria, Turkey, Greece, and Germany, offers a contemporary interpretation of Mediterranean makam traditions. Before the concert, Dr. Michalis Cholevas, Greek multi-instrumentalist and lecturer at Codarts Rotterdam, will give a short talk titled “Makam Roots” on the modal sound language of the Eastern Mediterranean to the Middle East, focusing on makam through the centuries, classical forms, and improvisation in taksim and gazel.
This project is made possible in part by the Cultuurfonds, the Catarina-Latina Fund, and Fonds 21.
For the Love of Music
Community life is an important social and cultural driving force in our society. Few things bring people together in the same way. Associations are without a doubt one of the most effective means against division in society. Both associations and individual enthusiasts or independent practitioners of amateur art are welcome at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. With the project For the Love of Music, we are happy to open our halls to everyone who loves music: creators, artists, and musicians from Eindhoven and the surrounding region.
