Trio Orelon has such an impressive list of awards to its name that one might wonder how this trio achieves such success. “The courage to remain true to yourself,” says Marco Sanna, the pianist of the group. He met violinist Judith Stapf and cellist Arnau Rovira i Bascompte in Cologne, where they were studying together. Orelon means “ear” in Esperanto— for listening. Listening to each other, to the music, and to the silence of the attentive audience. This philosophy has led them to the finals of the prestigious ARD competition and international chamber music competitions in Graz and Melbourne, each time winning first prize.
The cello opens Shostakovich’s Piano Trio with shimmering harmonics, high and ethereal, like the lonely song of angels from a distant universe. Then, dark violin tones tenderly slide beneath it. Thus begins one of the most magical and haunting chamber music works of the 20th century. In this piece, the composer not only sings of the horrors of war but also mourns the loss of a dear friend. “It will be incredibly difficult to live without him,” said Shostakovich. The warm, swaying opening measures of Ravel’s trio, which will be the second piece on the program this afternoon, feel like a comforting embrace after all this sorrow.
