The Vienna Musikverein, the Barbican Centre in London, the Cité de la Musique in Paris, L’Auditori in Barcelona, and the Cologne Philharmonic: the Van Baerle Trio has performed in venues like these. It has made a name for itself since its founding in 2004. The musicians met at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, located on Van Baerlestraat. They were greatly inspired by the lessons and masterclasses of Dmitri Ferschtman and Menahem Pressler, former figurehead of the Beaux Arts Trio. Top violinist Isabelle van Keulen joins this grand trio for optimal performances of Mozart and Schumann piano quartets.

It’s hard to imagine, but it’s true: once upon a time, a publisher was dissatisfied with Mozart. He commissioned a series of three quartets for piano and strings, but the publisher found the first two so difficult and complex that he abandoned the third. Mozart was ahead of his time in this respect, taking a step towards Romanticism, and these pieces are among his most profound works. Ernst von Dohnányi is not well-known outside his native Hungary, but his string trio is a classic and utterly captivating. Schumann wrote his only piano quartet during his so-called “chamber music year,” 1842, when he fully embraced this genre.
