In 2025, Muziekgebouw Eindhoven acquired two new Steinway grand pianos, an event that occurs only once every ten years. Two grands do not often appear together on stage, so this concert offers a rare opportunity to hear them in all their glory. Behind the pianos are the Greek pianists Vassilis Varvaresos and Iordanis Arzoglou. The programme features arrangements for two pianos of concertos by Kevin Puts (USA, 1972) and Frédéric Chopin. Varvaresos is a widely respected pianist and very familiar with the Romantic piano repertoire. The question “can an entire Chopin concerto really be performed on two grand pianos?” therefore raises little doubt: if Varvaresos says yes, then it certainly can.

In his beloved Second Piano Concerto, Chopin chose above all the lyricism of the notes, with virtuosity as an immediate second. The American composer Kevin Puts does something similar. With ‘Night’, the Pulitzer Prize winner created a dreamy and lyrical concerto in which he does not shy away from tonality, yet neither does he actively pursue it. There are no grand themes that lodge themselves in your ears, no heroic displays of force, but rather a search for where orchestra and piano can meet in sound, colour and structure. Puts wrote the work for his fellow American, the pianist, conductor and teacher Jeffrey Cohen.
