Spend a day drumming with Lucas van Merwijk, then parade through Eindhoven to open the TROMP Festival. Lucas is one of the most respected drummers in Europe. Over forty years he’s toured the world, learned Afro-Cuban drumming straight from the source in Cuba, and shared stages with names like Luis Conte and Armando Peraza. For one day in Eindhoven, you get to play with him.
Here’s how the day goes. It starts with a clinic: Lucas behind the kit, talking through how he plays and why. Coffee together. Then the hands-on part, where you learn his rhythms, work them out as a group, and build something you’ll all play together. A relaxed lunch, included, with Lucas and the other players. Then you head outside.
In the afternoon you join Lucas and La Maquina, an amazing group from Rotterdam whose players perform in sign language, for a parade through the heart of Eindhoven. Drums in the street, a crowd around you, and the official opening of the TROMP Festival. What you learned in the morning, played out loud in the city by the afternoon. Whether you play in a percussion group, study music, or just love to drum, there’s a spot for you.
