The career of Russian pianist Zlata Chochieva has been moving at turbo speed. She began playing the piano at the age of four, was immediately recognized as a talent, and ended up studying with the very best teachers, eventually rising to become a world star. She has won fifteen international competitions and recorded a series of albums that have been widely acclaimed. According to various experts, her playing “recalls that of Rachmaninov, the overwhelming power of Martha Argerich, and the refined sense of sound of her teacher Mikhail Pletnev.” The twenty-four etudes by Chopin are therefore in excellent hands with this pianist.

The phenomenon of the piano etude is not that old. It emerged in the first decades of the nineteenth century, at a time when the piano as a solo instrument was gaining ever more technical and melodic possibilities. Before Chopin, pianists struggled mainly with the tough, primarily technical exercises of Carl Czerny, but with Chopin emotion entered the notes and the etudes acquired a concert character. They address all aspects of pianistic skill, the entire keyboard is used, and virtuosity is always close at hand. Chopin himself considered the third etude, called Tristesse, to be the most beautiful.
