Five stars—nothing more is possible—was the rating given by the Volkskrant to Lahav Shani’s Mahler 2 with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Last season, the orchestra also left a lasting impression at Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. “You notice how effectively Shani manages dynamics and how sublimely the gigantic RPhO responds to him,” wrote the reviewer, clearly impressed by the experience. At the last moment of this Bruckner year 2024 (Bruckner was born two hundred years ago), we celebrate together with Shani and his Rotterdam musicians this ‘composer of monumental structures.’
Shani first encountered Bruckner’s unique sound world while playing the double bass in an orchestra. Now, he considers Bruckner one of the composers he admires most. “You often hear about Bruckner’s magnificent structures, but what touches me most is the atmosphere,” said the maestro. His main—and perhaps most challenging—task with Bruckner lies in building and conveying the narrative. In the case of this grand Eighth Symphony, it’s the story of a journey from darkness to light. A narrative that grabs you by the heart, offering an overwhelming experience to witness live.
