One of the most spectacular works in twentieth-century music history – you could certainly call it that: Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du Printemps. What an eerie high opening in the bassoon! Pounding, jagged rhythms! Brilliant orchestration! In 1913 the scandal-ridden premiere in Paris marked a true revolution. Today it appears on the music stands of our nearest southern neighbours, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. Conducting icon Jaap van Zweden, from Dutch soil, wields the baton. It could well become something very special… The French-Canadian pianist Bruce Liu established his name when he won the XVIII International Chopin Piano Competition in 2021.

‘I was the vessel through which the Sacre flowed,’ Igor Stravinsky said when, at the age of 30, he composed his masterpiece. The music was, as it were, forced upon him – a relentless inspiration. Magical, raw, at times even pagan sounds, as if old Russia had suddenly come back to life: he merely had to surrender to it. And voilà, his craftsmanship came in very handy as well. A few decades earlier, Tchaikovsky had also made it known that Mother Russia had the most magnificent sounds to offer. In 1874 he composed his First Piano Concerto, which initially even startled some listeners: ‘one or two pages might have been worth saving; the rest had to be destroyed’… Well, today the work is the most frequently recorded piano concerto of all time.
