Bamberg, in northern Bavaria. Not a metropolis, indeed a small town, but… Here, in 1946, members of the German Philharmonic Orchestra Prague and other Bohemian and Moravian musicians met, people who had been driven from their homes by the war. It was decided to establish a new orchestra. Since then the orchestra has become synonymous with the town of Bamberg: more than 10% of its inhabitants hold a subscription to the Bamberger Symphoniker. This top orchestra, with its distinctive dark, rounded and radiant sound, became one of the most widely travelled in the world and has performed in more than 500 cities worldwide. With the Japanese-American Midori as soloist, it joins forces with one of the greatest violinists of our time.
‘One in E minor is racing through my mind,’ Mendelssohn reported in a letter to a friend in 1838. He meant that a new violin concerto was in his head and would not let him go. And so a concerto was born that represents the most graceful side of Romanticism. Bruckner’s thoughts also worked overtime, but this time for his Ninth Symphony. That was less pleasant: he never managed to complete its finale. For that reason only the first three movements are usually performed – which, from Bruckner’s pen, remains a mighty experience. The Bamberger Symphoniker are the ideal interpreters of the German Romantic repertoire: ‘For here something has been achieved that rarely succeeds: opening up not only emotional but also intellectual spaces through music’ (Süddeutsche Zeitung).
