There aren’t many string quartets with an 80-year history, but the Borodin Quartet, founded in 1945, certainly can. During the Cold War, it also performed in the West, while being equally famous in the communist USSR. For example, the quartet played at the funerals of Stalin and Prokofiev. After all these years, and several changes in the lineup, it is now in top form. On the program is Borodin, after whom the quartet is named. And anyone who hears his First String Quartet will understand why: captivating melodies, heart-wrenching expression, and rich harmonies, all of this is present.

In addition to the rarely heard debut work by Borodin, the quartet will also perform a piece by his compatriot Rachmaninov. He was still young when he wrote his Romance for string quartet—only 17 years old—but it sounds mature and somewhat reminiscent of his great influence, Tchaikovsky. Brahms, on the other hand, was a more seasoned man when he wrote his romantic Third Quartet. He dedicated it to Professor Engelmann, who had given him shelter in Utrecht. Brahms dismissed his lighthearted masterpiece as “a small trifle,” to avoid it “taking on the serious character of a symphony,” a reference to the premiere of his dramatic First Symphony just a week earlier.
