What happens in our brains when we listen to music? How do sounds and emotions become physical sensations? And vice versa: how does a musician capture emotion in sound? In this edition of Scherpdenkers, neurobiologist and winner of The Smartest Person in the World, Brankele Frank, explores the relationship between music, stimuli, the brain and emotions. She does so on the basis of personal experiences, neuroscientific insights and music that is particularly capable of stimulating or, conversely, de-stimulating. Joining her on stage are clarinettist Jelmer de Moed, cellist Pieter de Koe, bajan player Robbrecht Van Cauwenberghe and pianist Rik Kuppen, who will perform music by contemporary composers Marko Tajčević, Celia Swart and Sebastian Fagerlund.

The folk character of Balkan music plays a major role in the music of the Croatian composer Marko Tajčević (1900-1984), who is unknown here. Celia Swart (1994) strives for simplicity in her music, which consists of small, simple building blocks. In the postmodern soundscapes of the Finnish composer Fagerlund (1972), the experience of nature is paramount. ‘I am fascinated by the relentless drive and energy of nature. Many of my works have a hint of primitivism. Rhythm plays a major role in this. My vision of music is a form of expression of fundamental questions and existential experiences,’ says Fagerlund, composer-in-residence at the Concertgebouw in 2021.
