This concert brings together the saxophone orchestras of the Conservatory of Tilburg and ArtEZ Conservatory, led by Juani Palop Tecles and Ties Mellema. The collaboration grew out of many years of exchange in teaching and projects, and from a shared view on sound, ensemble playing and repertoire. The combined saxophone orchestra allows for a rich palette of colors and textures. The program moves between counterpoint, lyricism and rhythmic energy, with music by Johann Sebastian Bach and Maurice Ravel, alongside contemporary works by Bart de Vrees and Henri Cowell. Alexander Glazunov’s Saxophone Concerto will also be performed in an arrangement for saxophone sextet, with Juani Palop Tecles as soloist. Students from both conservatories rehearse and perform together, working on balance, articulation, intonation, timing and ensemble awareness. The emphasis is on listening and shaping the music together, rather than on individual display.
Program
Bach – Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 (arr. Jean-Denis Michat)
Glazunov – Saxophone Concerto (arr. Vincent David, for saxophone sextet) – soloist: Palop Tecles
Ravel – Le Tombeau de Couperin (arr. Jacques Laroque, selected movements)
De Vrees – Herfst
Cowell – Air and Scherzo (arr. Erik-Jan de With) – soloist: Mellema
Brahms – Hungarian Dance No. 5 (arr. Arend Nijhuis)
Lunchtime concerts
Our lunchtime concerts are a delight to experience: both literally and figuratively! Taking a break in the middle of the day to relax for an hour with a nice concert in the Small Hall really makes the day feel refreshing. From piano recitals to chamber music and brass ensembles, the offerings are varied and innovative. Since we believe that emerging talent deserves a platform, our lunchtime concerts feature (recently graduated) students, competition winners, and other promising gems.
