The oldest municipal orchestra in the world? The Gewandhaus Orchestra from Leipzig. It can be traced back to 1479, when a college of “Kunstpfeiffer” was formed, which later evolved into the orchestra. In 1743, Das Große Concert was established, and in 1781, the orchestra took up residence on the vacant first floor of the textile guild building (hence Gewandhausorchester). A rich history… The orchestra is distinguished by its individual, warm, and dark tonal palette, performs over three hundred concerts per year, and is now – uniquely! – coming to Eindhoven. Brahms’ romantic, sometimes even heroically described, Third Symphony is on the stand with chief conductor Andris Nelsons at the podium.

Seong-Jin Cho will be the soloist. A rising star since he won the prestigious Chopin International Competition in Warsaw in 2015. “Cho is a master. He displayed an impressive diversity of tonal colors and remarkable technique, completed […] with panache” (The Wall Street Journal). Cho will perform Mendelssohn’s beautifully expressive First Piano Concerto, the result of a love affair the young composer experienced. Mendelssohn was the conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra for many years, elevating it to great heights and premiering his Scottish Symphony and Violin Concerto there. Brahms also had strong ties with the famous orchestra: it performed the premiere of his Violin Concerto.

Program

Haydn – Symphony No. 22 ‘Philosopher’
Mendelssohn – Piano Concerto No. 1
Brahms – Symphony No. 3

GLOW Eindhoven

The annual light art festival GLOW transforms the streets of Eindhoven into a dazzling light spectacle from Saturday, November 8 to Saturday, November 15. With over 750,000 visitors attending during this week, the city center of Eindhoven will be extra busy. In addition, there are currently many roadworks taking place in the city center. We therefore recommend using an up-to-date route planner when planning your trip and allowing extra travel time to reach MgE.

Our advice
If possible, we advise you not to travel by car to the concert. Muziekgebouw Eindhoven is within walking distance of Eindhoven Central Station, and trains continue to run after the concert. Alternatively, you can come by bike and park it for free in the bicycle parking facility at 18 Septemberplein. See all bicycle parking locations and opening hours here.

Would you still prefer to come by car? We recommend parking in one of the Q-Park garages or at a Park & Ride (P+R) location and continuing your journey by public transport. Check out the recommended transport and parking options here.
