“I wasn’t expecting this much suspense,” said historian and television maker Hans Goedkoop in an interview with Volkskrant. After nearly eighty years of peace, Europe feels the war creeping closer. But do we really still know what war means? History tells stories about it. Hans Goedkoop, known as the presenter of the TV series Andere Tijden, has his own story to tell. Goedkoop increasingly felt that, to be of any value as a historian, he had to dive into the story. “I had to get really close to it to be able to think: this actually happened. To make it real for myself.” He followed the path of his grandfather’s colonial war. Visited places, spoke to eyewitnesses. By the end of his journey, Hans Goedkoop had lost the words to express his bewilderment. He now understands why those who have been the deepest in war are often the ones who say the least about it. The music will express what words can’t this evening, with four incredible musicians, all from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, who will perform works by Ravel, Berg, and Stravinsky that were created during the First World War.

Programme

Berg – 4 Stücke opus 5
Stravinksy – l’Histoire du Soldat (suite)
