Neerlands hoop in bange dagen (Dutch hope in fearful times) was the name of the cabaret group founded by Freek de Jonge and Bram Vermeulen in 1968. ‘Is there hope in troubled times?’ asks writer Joke Hermsen in this edition of Scherpdenkers. The question of what we can hope for was already posed in 1871 by philosopher Immanuel Kant. Hope, Hermsen argues, has to do with our imagination and our awareness of time. Hope is nourished by inspiring stories and music, and by encounters with others. Such as with the English Marmen Quartet and percussionist Dominique Vleeshouwers, who will perform two works by American composer Samuel Adams (1985) this evening, in which time is explored in an unconventional way.
The successful Samuel Adams is no stranger to the Netherlands; in 2021, he was composer-in-residence at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He is the son of world-renowned composer John Adams. He draws on a wide range of disciplines, including classical forms, micro-sound, and noise, an experimental art music movement in which noise, distortion, and non-musical sounds are the main components. For Adams, there are no taboos. He is just as easily inspired by Schubert and Stravinsky as by modern jazz, tango, or Japanese pop music. With Dominique Vleeshouwers and the English Marmen Quartet, he will perform “Devotions” and “Sundial.”
