‘Monumental and brilliant.’ ‘A genius who has reached the height of his creative powers.’ That is what Tagesspiegel and Spectator wrote about the British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor. And: ‘Everything he touches turns to gold’ (Classical Source). What will turn to gold tonight is the Piano Concerto by Edvard Grieg. This Norwegian meets another Scandinavian: Jean Sibelius. His First Symphony will be heard. A beautiful, long clarinet solo opens the vision in which Sibelius depicts Finland’s vast forests and lakes. As energetic and concise as Grieg is, Sibelius breathes broadly. An evening entirely in Scandinavian atmospheres, with a top British orchestra.

Since it was founded in 1932 by Sir Thomas Beecham, the London Philharmonic Orchestra has been one of the world’s most pioneering and inspiring orchestras. With every performance it aims to astonish the modern world and strengthen its position as one of the leading orchestras of the 21st century. ‘Real Swedish punch!’ Franz Liszt exclaimed when he sight-read the piano concerto by the then 26-year-old Grieg. He was deeply moved by the originality, the unexpectedness, the uniqueness of this score. And of Sibelius’ First one reads: ‘Here is a lonely man in conversation with the forces of nature.’
