‘Magnificent and inspired,’ writes Die Presse. The Mozarteumorchester Salzburg maintains a high standard, especially when it comes to performances of Mozart’s music. (It is no coincidence that it bears the name of the city where the composer was born.) Today, too, the ‘angel from Salzburg’ appears on the music stands. The Turkish star pianist Fazıl Say is the soloist in Piano Concerto No. 23. A radiant work in which both orchestra and soloist can truly shine. The slow middle movement is astonishingly poignant and plaintive, and perhaps one of Mozart’s most beautiful. Say also appears on the programme as a composer with his orchestral tribute to Atatürk. Schumann’s magnificent Second Symphony brings the programme to a close. A key work that both quotes Bach and points ahead to Bruckner.

Fazıl Say represents the nowadays rare phenomenon of the performing musician who is also a composer. In Mozart’s time this was very common; today the two are usually separate. Say plays with dazzling brilliance and has also built an impressive body of work as a composer. He has a special affinity with Mozart, performing his music regularly, which also forms a lasting inspiration for his own compositions. Tonight’s programme includes Yürüyen Köşk, or The Walking Mansion, referring to an episode from the life of the politician Atatürk, a lover of nature, who once had his house moved to make room for a large tree…
