The life story of Jesus Christ is an eternal fountain of inspiration. All emotions flow together in it: love, suffering, purification, and redemption. Georg Friedrich Handel understood this like no one else. In his Messiah from 1741, Handel embodies the spiritual journey of Jesus Christ. This full-length oratorio is music of hope from which entire generations of listeners have drawn faith. “I truly thought I saw the whole heaven before me and the great God Himself,” Handel remarked about his Messiah.

For Handel, Messiah was a golden stroke of genius. Expensive operas were becoming less popular, but his large-scale oratorios could still be staged with fewer financial resources. Messiah marked a breakthrough and grew to become his greatest success. In the rich Messiah libretto by Charles Jennens, texts from Old Testament prophets and passages from the New Testament are cleverly combined. At the forefront is the inner drama of the poignant life of Jesus Christ. Generations of listeners still surrender to the meditative power of Handel’s Messiah.

This Advent masterpiece is now performed under the inspiring direction of conductor Peter Dijkstra. For this production, Dijkstra’s choir MUSA and Philzuid combine their forces. Top soloists like Maarten Engeltjes and Anna Dennis join in. It’s high time to surrender to Handel’s masterpieces like Comfort ye, my people, Rejoice greatly, and Hallelujah.
