The Austrian composer Anton Bruckner poured all his compositional skill into his Seventh Symphony. With this seventy-minute orchestral cathedral, Bruckner gained international fame for the first time. For many music lovers, the composer Bruckner remains an enigma. He preferred to keep his inner world hidden from the outside. Those who wish to get to know Bruckner must turn to his impressive symphonic oeuvre. In his four-movement Seventh Symphony, we come very close to the world of the reclusive Bruckner. The Adagio is one of Bruckner’s most poignant creations. A heartfelt tribute to his ailing mentor Richard Wagner. Even in the impressive Finale, Bruckner alludes to Wagner’s lush harmonies. For any conductor, Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony is a true test of skill. Philzuid previously received praise for their performance of Bruckner’s 7th under Hartmut Haenchen. “Musical highlight,” judged the NRC. There is great anticipation for the version conducted by principal conductor Duncan Ward.
Spiritual sound poetry can also be found in the music of the young French composer Lili Boulanger (1893–1918), who passed away too soon. Her remarkably accessible choral and orchestral music is being rediscovered today. Like no one else, Boulanger painted with sound colors and sensual harmonies. Her great talent was noticed early on by Gabriel Fauré. In 1913, she became the first woman to win the prestigious Prix de Rome. Philzuid now presents two of Boulanger’s sacred masterpieces, Psalm 24 and Vieille prière bouddhique. Additionally, there will be a brand-new commission by the Dutch composer Renske Vrolijk for choir and orchestra. Vrolijk’s resonant compositions are influenced by postminimalism. In her mesmerizing Pelgrinage, she pays tribute to the pilgrims and their procession filled with fear, hope, and purification.
